Haiku are so fun,

it’s hard to write just the one

so I wrote three more…

A student invented and designed leaf as an annotated drawing with botanic labels. This is an example of a student from my lesson Design-A-Leaf. A lesson crafted to inspire imagination and student ownership as they are unleashed to invent a new species. This student-centered lesson culminates in a gallery, where students share the tale of their plant and how it would survive in the environment. Thus students are becoming knowledgeable practitioners as they integrate ecology and art.

To be a better community member, this student challenged themselves by staying focused and on task. I place a strong emphasis on team-building in my teaching and strive to instill the importance of working together as a life skill. As a systems thinker, I attempt to elicit student recognition of how individual actions can cause ripple effects within a community.
On the first and last of 4 days at IslandWood, students complete this self-evaluation document of their personal Path to Stewardship. This assessment tool attempts to assess potential changes in regards to student attitudes towards Stewardship as a result of their immersive environmental education at IslandWood.
